Iggy Azalea Beats Eminem, Drake At American Music Awards

Mullumbimby’s very own superstar Iggy Azalea has defeated Eminem and Drake at the 2014 American Music Awards in Los Angeles, beating the two in both the Favourite Artist and Favourite Album awards in the Rap/Hip Hop category.

Iggy’s Best Album nod was awarded for her debut full-length The New Classic, which was released in April. “This award is the first award I’ve ever won in my entire life,” she said as she accepted the prize.

Iggy’s victories come after she hit out at Eminem earlier this month, but she steered clear of the beef in her AMA acceptance speech. She explained that winning in the Rap/Hip Hop category meant a lot to her, citing the stature of her fellow nominees.

“It means so much to me that it is for best hip hop because that is what inspired me to move to America and pursue my dreams and it’s what helped me when I was a teenager to escape,” she said. “It means so much that I can stand here against Eminem and Drake and come out with this, it’s amazing.”

Iggy Azalea was the most nominated artist on the night, with a total of six nominations. She later took to the AMA stage with Charli XCX to perform her hit song Fancy, with a group of dancers dressed as paparazzi. Iggy then followed it up with a performance of Beg For It, and even joined Jennifer Lopez for a particularly, um, revealing performance of their song Booty.

Sydney band 5 Seconds Of Summer also took out the New Artist Of The Year Award, as well as performing their single What I Like About You. “This just shows that a little band from Sydney can do great things,” band member Ashton Irwin said as they accepted the awarded.

Kiwi sensation Lorde was nominated for a total of four nominations but missed out on a win. She did, however, perform the live debut of her Hunger Games track, Yellow Flicker Beat (below).

Other big winners on the night included boy band One Direction, who took home three awards including Artist Of The Year. Katy Perry took three awards, pipping Iggy for both Favorite Female Artist — Pop/Rock and Single Of The Year. Beyonce took out two awards, Favorite Female Artist — Soul/R&B and Favourite Album – Soul/R&B.

Unlike the Grammys, which are awarded based on votes from members of the Recording Academy, the winners of the American Music Awards are determined by a poll of the public and music buyers. A full list of winners and nominees from this year’s American Music Awards is available below.
