In what has to be one the more bizarre pieces of new this week, Iggy Pop, Grace Jones, Henry Rollins and Eagles of Death Metal‘s Jesse Hughes have all been announced to feature in a silent film titled Gutterdämmerung.
Billed as “the loudest silent movie on earth,” Gutterdämmerung is definitely not your conventional film. It’s been created by Belgian-Swedish director and visual artist Bjorn Tagemose and it’s half rock show, half cinema experience.
According to BEAT Magazine, Gutterdämmerung will tour around with a 1920s-style silent movie providing the visual and a live rock band delivering all the sound including special effects. Cinema-goers won’t even be able to sit down. “It is not a film that you see in the traditional way,” Rollins explains in a video, below. “You will be standing up for this very loud, fully-immersive experience”
12 rockstars will star in the film with the remainder of the cast to be announced, Bad Blood-style, in the lead-up to Gutterdämmerung’s launch.
Rollins acts in the film and was also was a co-screenwriter. It’s set in an alternate universe where God has saved everyone from sin by removing the Devil’s Evil Guitar. There’s no more sex, drugs and rock n’ roll in this new world until Iggy Pop’s character Vicious sends the guitar back to earth.
Rollins plays a priest who convinces a girl to destroy the guitar, which then leads her on a journey facing some of rock n’ roll’s most evil. Grace Jones plays the only woman capable of controlling the male rock gods’ testosterone (so, she basically plays herself).
This truly feels like something that we will just get further and further away from understanding the more we know about it.
