Jim Carrey reprises his role as Dr. Robotnik in the new film Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Speaking to Access Hollywood’s Kit Hoover, Carrey has suggested the role could be his last.
Carrey made the revelation after Hoover told him Dolly Parton wants Carrey to play musician Porter Wagoner in a Parton biopic. “Would you do it?” said Hoover. “Well, I’m retiring,” replied Carrey. “No,” said Hoover. “Yeah probably,” said Carrey.
He went on to explain, “I’m being fairly serious. It depends—if the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road. But I’m taking a break, yeah.”
Prior to Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Carrey’s most recent films were Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), Dark Crimes (2016), The Bad Batch (2016) and Dumb and Dumber To (2014). He played Joe Biden on six episodes of Saturday Night Live in the lead up to the 2020 US Presidential election and starred in two seasons of the Showtime comedy-drama, Kidding, alongside Catherine Keener (2018-2020).
Carrey’s commercial peak lasted from the mid-‘90s to the mid-‘00s, spanning films such as Ace Ventura, The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, The Cable Guy, Liar Liar, The Truman Show, Me, Myself & Irene, Bruce Almighty and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Earlier this year, Carrey, who is now 60 years old, provided narration on several tracks from the latest album by The Weeknd; Dawn FM.
