Kanye West Almost Didn’t Let Beck Finish At The Grammys

After six long years away from the award ceremony, Kanye West made his return to the Grammys this year and took it as an opportunity to show the world a rare glimpse at his less serious side, almost reprising his infamous “I’mma let you finish” moment during Beck‘s acceptance speech for album of the year.

For the uninitiated, the original incident dates back to 2009 at the MTV Video Music Awards when Kanye interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video to tell her and the audience, “I’m really happy for you, and I’mma let you finish. But Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time.”

Fast forward six years to a surprised Beck being awarded a Grammy by Prince for his 2014 record Morning Phase, beating out albums by Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Pharrell Williams and, yes, Beyoncé. As the indie rocker was about to say his thanks, Kanye ascended onto the stage as if to repeat history. Turns out though, Yeezy just has a keen sense of humour.

Watch the encounter, including Jay Z and Beyoncé’s reaction, below.

UPDATE 09/02/15 5.19pm: Turns out Kanye’s almost-stage invasion may not have been completely in jest after all. Speaking to E! after the ceremony, Kanye called out the Grammys for not respecting “real artists” and suggested that Beck “should have given his award to Beyoncé” out of respect for artistry.

According to Vanity Fair, West added that he didn’t take to the stage to air his grievances so as to protect his wife and child. Watch footage of his comments below.
