Katy Perry Announces She’s Leaving American Idol

Pop icon Katy Perry, known for hits like ‘Roar’ and ‘Firework,’ is stepping away from her role as a judge on “American Idol” after seven seasons. The announcement came during her appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Monday night. She had been part of the judging panel alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan since 2018 when the show moved to ABC.

Katy Perry shared her decision with Jimmy Kimmel, expressing that she feels it’s time to follow her own rhythm and explore new ventures, “I think this probably will be my last show, my last season for ‘Idol.'” Perry further revealed to Kimmel. “I feel like I need to go out and feel that pulse to my own beat, you know what I’m saying, Jimmy?” she said.

Katy Perry Also Hints At Releasing New Music

While Kimmel was surprised by the news, Perry assured him that her fellow judges were aware of her decision. She hinted at exciting upcoming plans, including a performance at the Rock in Rio music festival in Brazil and teased about new music on the horizon.

“It’s going to be a very, very exciting year,” Perry told Kimmel, hinting at a fresh chapter in her music career. “Let’s just say I’m creating space for my new wingspan.”

Despite her love for the show, Perry expressed a desire to explore the world and focus on her music. It’s been four years since her last studio album, “Smile,” dropped and she recently concluded a Las Vegas residency.

Fans can catch Perry’s final season as a judge when Season 22 of “American Idol” premieres on Sunday, Feb. 18, on ABC. While her departure marks the end of an era for the show, Perry’s fans are eagerly anticipating what she has in store for her next musical journey.
