The ever-prolific King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have announced their seventh album in three years will be the 12-track acoustic collection Paper Mâché Dream Balloon, which is set for release in November.
As frontman Stu Mackenzie explains, Paper Mâché Dream Balloon is a big change of pace for the band, who are renowned for knocking out heavy and conceptual records.
“After Mind Fuzz and Quarters! I was starting to get over concept records,” Mackenzie says.
“I wanted to make an album with a collection of short unrelated songs. I wanted to steer away from electric guitar music which I felt like we’d explored pretty heavily on the last couple.
“So Paper Mâché Dream Balloon, the concept-less concept album, got a concept. No electric instruments. Just acoustic guitars, flute, double bass, fiddle, harmonica, drum kit, clarinet. Whatever we could find, really.
“We recorded it mostly in an empty shipping container on my parents’ farm in country Victoria. It was all horses, emus and Tim Tams.”
The first taste of Paper Mâché Dream Balloon is the album’s title track, which is currently available on iTunes.
Paper Mâché Dream Balloon, which follows King Gizzard’s sixth studio album, Quarters!, will be released on 13th November, with 1000 deluxe tri-colour vinyl copies available for pre-order via the King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Bandcamp page.
