11 years since Axle Whitehead flashed his penis at the ARIAs, Callinan stopped for photos on the ARIA Awards red carpet in Sydney, before lifting his kilt and waiting a few seconds to allow the moment to be captured.
Shortly after, a number of critics took to social media to criticise Callinan for subjecting people to his genitals, and for behaving in what one called a “deplorable and tone deaf” manner:
was kirin j callinan removed from the arias after what he did bc subjecting everyone to his penis is really not okay and shouldn't be seen any other way

I'm just gonna hang out here until Kirin J Callinan gets the flick from this line-up after his deplorable and tone deaf behaviour on the ARIA red carpet tonight. https://t.co/0imgo5PcXy

Callinan is yet to publicly comment on the backlash which followed his flashing.
The singer-songwriter, who released his latest album Bravado earlier this year, isn’t a stranger to controversy.
Earlier this month he responded to some tongue-in-cheek criticism from talk-show host Jimmy Fallon, and is known to regularly share nude photos on his social media.
Callinan was nominated for the Best Video ARIA this year for his clip for ‘S.A.D’, but lost out to Bliss N Eso’s ‘Moments’. Catch up on all the night’s winners (and losers) right here.
