While Sydney’s nightlife and night time economy continues to suffer under the state government’s lockout laws – London’s Lord Mayor has committed to the protection of his city’s iconic clubs and night time economy.
Despite the recent news that certain Sydney venues may soon be exempt from the laws, the lockouts have already had a devastating effect on our nightlife; with many establishments having closed their doors permanently since the laws were passed.
It now appears certain that London will not be following Sydney’s example, with Lord Mayor Sadiq Khan taking to Facebook with a post outlining his intention to protect London’s “iconic clubs,” as well as its “theatres, live music venues, artist workspaces, historic buildings and pubs.”
Khan’s post is great news for thousands of Londoners who’ve been petitioning to keep London’s famous Fabric Nightclub open. The club has recently come under criticism following numerous drug-related hospitalisations.
Part of the Mayor’s plan involves appointing a “Night Czar” to lead the charge to make London a safe, but enjoyable place to be at night. “It is so important that people are able to enjoy a fun and safe night out in the capital,” reads Khan’s post.
“No single organisation or public body can solve these problems alone – we all need to work together to ensure London thrives as a 24-hour city, in a way that is safe and enjoyable for everyone. I am committed to using the influence of my office to overcome the numerous challenges facing the night time economy.”
