Mastodon Team Up With Butthole Surfers’ Gibby Haynes, Stream ‘Atlanta’

Mastodon have teamed up with Butthole Surfers frontman Gibby Haynes for the latest instalment of Adult Swim’s 2014 Singles Program. Titled Atlanta after the progressive metallers’ hometown, the track combines Mastodon’s legendary riffage power with Haynes’s trademark absurdist sing-talking.

The track is the first original Mastodon composition since the release of their sixth album, Once More ‘Round the Sun, in June. Music Feeds reviewer Shane Arnold praised the album, calling it “a slick production that is another behemoth in the Mastodon catalogue” and “full of pounding riffs”.

Speaking to Music Feeds shortly before the release of the album, bassist Troy Sanders said the band are determined to return to Australia with a headline tour on the current album cycle. Having performed at Soundwave 2014, Sanders said the band want to embark on a “proper club slash theatre” tour.

Other contributions in this year’s Adult Swim Singles series include tracks from Sleep, Deafheaven, Flying Lotus‘ hip-hop alter ego, Captain Murphy, and dance music legend Giorgio Moroder, whose contribution, Giorgio’s Theme, marked the influential producer and musician’s first single in 22 years.
