The Midway Report: Triple J’s Hottest 100 Of 2015

UPDATE: The winner of triple j‘s Hottest 100 of 2015 has been announced

ORIGINAL STORY: With 50 songs down, we’ve hit the middle of triple j‘s Hottest 100 of 2015, and there’s a bunch of juicy Hottest 100 goodness to review as we settle in for the rest of the countdown.

So far, Australian musos have been reppin’ their homeland strongly, with 25 local acts making the first half of the countdown.

Of the Aussies, Courtney Barnett has already scored three entries with Nobody Really Cares If You Don’t Go To The Party (#95), Depreston (#82) and Elevator Operator (#75), which all appear on her debut album Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit.

Elsewhere, electronic duo Flight Facilities have charted twice with Heart Attack (#85) and Down To Earth (#83), while Tame Impala have made the first of what’s sure to be many entries on this year’s Hottest 100 with their Currents track ‘Cause I’m A Man (#61).

When it comes to the gender split between Hottest 100 songs, 21 of the first 50 tracks have featured female vocals while 28 have included male vocals. Interestingly, Ratata’s Cream On Chrome (which is completely instrumental) has become the fifth instrumental song to ever make the Hottest 100.

Two covers from triple j‘s Like A Version segment have also made the first half of this year’s Hottest 100: Tuka’s take on Angus & Julia Stone’s Big Jet Plane (#81) and Sticky Fingers’ version of DMA’s Delete (#84).

As for international acts, Major Lazer, rapper A$AP Rocky and British rockers Bring Me The Horizon and The Wombats have all charted twice.

Triple j says a total of 26 acts will make their Hottest 100 debut this year, and we’ve already seen maiden Hottest 100 gongs from Aussie acts like Golden Features, Methyl Ethel and What So Not. There’s also Ngaiire, who has become the first Papua New Guinean artist to chart in the Hottest 100.

Triple j says no songs have been disqualified from this year’s Hottest 100, meaning there’s still a chance old mate Justin Bieber could make his way onto the countdown despite the station’s ‘troll clause’. If he does, it’s sure to make whoever keeps editing the Hottest 100 Wikipedia page pretty happy. Just look at this dedication:
