Hailing from New York City, the delightfully offbeat Darwin Deez (real name: Darwin Smith) will release his self-titled debut album this 23rd April on Pod through Inertia.

Describing his kooky strain of pop as “a little bit ‘Thriller’, a little bit Dismemberment Plan”, Darwin Deez makes music which pulses and throbs deliciously with life and a rare wit. With a fondness for D.I.Y aesthetics and twisted wordplay, his sound calls to mind everyone from The Strokes and Beck to MGMT and The Flaming Lips. Onstage, he’s been known to choreograph synchronised dance routines to Beyonce and the Bangles, which can erupt anytime, almost out of nowhere.
Born in North Carolina to Meher Baba disciples, Darwin grew up on a diet of Weezer, Nirvana and Nada Surf, and started his first band with friends at age 12. Attending Wesleyan University in Connecticut – a college whose alumni includes the likes of Santigold, MGMT, and Amazing Baby – Darwin eventually found himself at home in New York, where he became a fixture of Monday nights at the Sidewalk Cafe in the East Village. Billed as “the legendary stomping ground for NYC’s Anti-folk scene”, the cafe is also responsible for launching artists such as Regina Spektor, Adam Green and Kimya Dawson. Here, Deez felt like he had finally found his niche. “It was the real hub of the action for me. I became inspired to write better lyrics by studying the other songwriter-performers there”.
Singularly brilliant, hilarious, complex, entertaining individual, Darwin Deez writes songs that will make you want to bust out your dancing shoes while also touching that raw, emotional nerve in your body. With Triple J already spinning his single ‘Constellations’ (having downloaded it from his website), it is clear that Darwin Deez is everything a pop star should be, yet so rarely is.
