Newcomer Gawurra Wins Big At The NIMAs

A new face in Aussie music Gawurra has won big at the National Indigenous Music Awards (NIMAs), taking home four awards.

Gawurra from Milingibi Island country nabbed the award for Album Of The Year with his debut record Ratja Yaliyali (Vine of Love) beating out Gurrumul Yunupingu and Dan Sultan. He also won New Talent as well as Best Cover Art and Film Clip for his track Ratja Yaliyali.

He wasn’t the only winner on the night though with the legendary Gurrumul Yunupingu taking out the award for Artist Of The Year for the fifth time. Gurrumul releases his third album The Gospel Album last year.

Indigenous rapper Briggs was also a winner as his tune The Children Came Back with Dewayne Everettsmith and Gurrumul was crowned Song Of The Year.

The winner of the triple j Unearthed High Indigenous Initiative was also announced with Tia Gostelow from Mackay winning ongoing mentorship from the Association of Artist Managers and a song-writing workshop for her school.
