BoJack Horseman is US-based streaming service Netflix’s first foray into the world of adult animation. Besides being Netflix’s first cartoon series, themes penned by The Black Keys‘ Patrick Carney and Grouplove mean it could have the coolest soundtrack since South Park recruited Primus for their theme.
Carney’s theme isn’t exactly the kind of sound palette you would normally associate with the drummer for a raucous blues rock duo. Opening with a playful synth lead, the theme is a bizarre crescendo that slowly builds with sampled strings, horns, wailing saxophone, choral arrangements, and dub-style drums.
Meanwhile, Grouplove’s end credits soundtrack tells the tale of the show’s titular anthropomorphic horse slash man (voiced by Arrested Development‘s Will Arnett) with a smoky, shuffling freak folk tune whose echo-laden harmonies evoke Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Mumford & Sons.
