Pavement Announce 2023 Australian Headline Tour

US indie rock legends Pavement have announced their return to Australia. The veteran group will tour the country in early 2023 as part of their long-delayed reunion celebrations.

Kicking off in February 2022, the group will perform theatre shows in Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Thirroul, Sydney, and Melbourne. The group will also headline the Tent Pole “musical jamboree” in Geelong and make an appearance at Hobart’s Mona Foma.

Pavement first formed in 1989, featuring vocalist/guitarist Stephen Malkmus, guitarist Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg and drummer Gary Young. After releasing their 1992 debut album, Slanted and Enchanted, the lineup grew to include bass player Mark Ibold and percussionist/synth player Bob Nastanovich, with Steve West replacing Young. They recorded four more albums, including 1994’s Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, one of the defining albums of the ’90s lo-fi/indie rock movement.

Pavement split in 1999 but announced a brief reunion in 2010, resulting in their first Australian tour since 1997. They disbanded soon after, before announcing in 2019 that another reunion was underway. Initial plans to perform at the 2020 Primavera Sound festivals in Barcelona and Porto were pushed back, with the reunited group eventually taking to the stage earlier this year.
