Southbound 2016 Cancelled Due To Bushfires

UPDATE 13/01/16: Southbound has shared details of its ticket refund process following its 2016 cancellation, as well as ways that ticket-holders can support ongoing bushfire relief efforts.

ORIGINAL STORY: Western Australia’s Southbound Festival has been cancelled as a dangerous bushfire situation continues in the areas surrounding the event’s Busselton venue.

In a statement, Southbound organisers say they made the decision to pull the plug after consulting with the West Australian Police, Main Roads Department and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

“We cannot compromise patron safety and proceed knowing people’s lives are at risk getting to the event,” organisers say.

With bushfires compromising roads surrounding the festival, there is currently no access to the festival site and no time to plot a relocation of the event.

“The fire, which started Wednesday afternoon and reached emergency status during the night and into Thursday morning, has left us with no time to relocate prior to gates opening tomorrow,” organisers say.

Southbound Director David Chitty says, “Everyone on site is absolutely devastated as we were working so hard to bring the best Southbound yet. Please understand at this time we will be extremely busy dealing with the cancellation and our thoughts are with those in danger due to the nearby fire.”

Southbound ticket-holders will receive refund information on Wednesday, 13th January. Organisers are promising full refunds and are asking punters for patience at this difficult time.

Southbound 2016 was set to take place from Friday, 8th January until Sunday, 10th January at Sir Steward Bovell Park, and had scheduled an impressive lineup featuring the likes of Bloc Party, Foals and Disclosure.

The Lorne leg of the 2015/2016 Falls Festival was relocated to Mount Duneed Estate in December, also due to local bushfires.
