In not entirely unsurprising news, Perth’s young psychedelic troops Tame Impala have dominated the 2011 WA Music Industry Awards, which honours the best that Western Australian music can offer. It was also a good night for emerging ensemble Split Seconds.
The event took place in Northbridge, Perth at The Bakery, and was hosted by Dom Alessio and Dylan Lewis. Live performances came from John Bennett and Grace Woodroofe.
Tame Impala were lords of their domain though, taking gongs for Most Popular Act, Most Popular Live Act, Best Rock Act and Best Guitarist for frontman Kevin Parker. The band even deigned to DJ at the ceremony’s closing party.
Split Seconds, meanwhile, received accolades on the back of their debut self-titled EP. They scooped Favourite Newcomer, Most Promising New Act, Best Indie-pop Act and Best Male Vocalist for singer Sean Pollard.
Birds of Tokyo were also celebrating after claiming the award for Most Popular Album for their self-titled effort, while band member Glenn Sarangapany picked up the Best Instrumentalist Award. Others to go home with heavier pockets were Tim & Jean, Felicity Groom and Abbe May. For more details head to The Music Network.
Before the ceremony took place, The Waifs and manager of The Panics Pete Carroll were inducted into the WAMi Hall of Fame for their contribution to Western Australia’s musical culture, while late producer Shaun O’Callaghan was awarded a posthumous induction to the Hall of Fame. He died last year.
Tame Impala are gearing up for their appearance at this year’s VIVID festival, after which they head overseas for dates, including a set at Glastonbury.
