The Black Keys Attack Van Halen Over Bassist Change – “That’s Fucking Retarded”

The Blacky Keys seem to be everywhere at the moment, taking time from their vigorous array of live shows and TV cameos recently to check out gods of rock Van Halen perform, though as The Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney has told Rolling Stone, he didn’t enjoy himself “at all”.

Carney is quite expressive in the interview as he details his concerns with the performance, mainly involved with the absence of original bassist Michael Anthony, who was substituted by frontman Eddie Van Halen’s son Wolfgong, apparently outraging the buzzworthy alternative rock drummer.

“I just saw Van Halen without Michael Anthony. I’m not a very big Van Halen fan but it was such a fucking bummer. Like what the fuck is the point? I mean, sure, Eddie Van Halen’s son (Wolfgang) is a pretty good bass player and he’s a 20-year-old kid and that’s cool, but like, what the fuck is that? That’s fucking retarded. If someone is able to be in a band for 30 years and then people are okay with replacing him with a 17-year-old, they’re obviously motherfucking assholes, right?”

Carney’s view varies greatly from a number of other fans of Van Halen, a band that went into a decade-long coma until Wolfgang joined 5 years ago. Van Halen has even stated that the band wouldn’t be around if it wasn’t for his son’s energy and organisation.

While on his soap box, Carney also took time to take aim at Van Halen’s music, which he describes for the most part as “exceptionally awful”. This comes after the duo, who do like to cause a fuss, commented on Jane’s Addiction Guitarist Dave Navarro, giving him the simple advice: “You’re doing it wrong!”
