The Go-Betweens To Release ‘Quiet Heart: The Best Of The Go-Betweens’

Brisbane veteran rockers The Go-Betweens have announced plans to release Quiet Heart: The Best of the Go-Betweens. It will be the band’s first career-spanning retrospective offering. The album will also come with a live DVD, Vienna Burns, which shows the band in fully glory, live in 1987.

The Go-Betweens released a plethora of albums. The Best Of was compiled from tracks off their extensive back catalogue, including Send Me a Lullaby (1982) and Before Hollywood (1983). Robert Vickers joined on bass as The Go-Betweens recorded Spring Hill Fair (1984) and Liberty Belle and The Black Diamond Express (1986). Amanda Brown joined the band, bringing violin, oboe and her divine vocals to the band’s next album Tallulah (1987).

Grant McLennan and Robert Forster, the creative pair behind the band, were praised as “the greatest songwriting partnership working today” by the Village Voice. The band maintained fairly solid momentum, with their presence felt in the Australian music industry until 2006, when Grant McLennan passed away. The news was a shock to the band, who decided it was time to hang up their leads and put down their drum sticks.

Their influence never faded, with many bands, including Belle & Sebastian and Teenage Fanclub, listing The Go-Betweens as important factors. The Best Of will be released August 31 through EMI. You can check out which gems have had the dust blown off for the album.
