The Pharcyde Australian Tour August 2012 – 20-Year Anniversary Shows

It’s been 20 years since hip hop legends The Pharcyde broke into the rap scene of the early 90s. A market bloated with ray ban wearing, Chuck Taylor’s Gangstas had never seen the likes of a crew so self-deprecating and so smart. For 20 years the rappers kept to their vision and will be celebrating the milestone with a handful of shows around Australia.

It’s now been two decades since Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde was released, the group’s first album that included 90’s hip hop anthems such as Oh Shit, Otha Fish, Ya’ Mama, and chart topper, Passing Me By. That particular album sold over a million copies and was labelled one of the best albums ever by Pitchfork. Their skills as visionaries became clear after the release of their second album LabCabInCalifornia after they employed the then unknown J Dilla to produce it. The single off that album, Drop, also came with a Spike Jonze-directed video clip.

The last time the gang was in town was for Good Vibes back in 2009, a performance that was by all accounts totally kick-ass. Now, California’s Imani and Bootie Brown will be bringing the beats back for a headlining show. Despite now being veterans of the genre, The Pharcyde still inflict a long-lasting live performance, demonstrating the talent that saw them not only take on the rap game, but conquer it.
