The xx’s Romy Announces 2024 Australian Headline Shows

Romy, the acclaimed singer-songwriter best known for her work with the band The xx, has announced a couple of Australian headline shows to take place in the first week of 2024. Romy is also on the lineup for Victoria’s Beyond the Valley and the Brisbane and Perth instalments of Wildlands.

The xx won a legion of fans with their debut record, 2009’s xx, which illustrated the London trio’s knack for combining emotional vulnerability with inventive and shape-shifting production. Romy’s debut solo record, Mid Air, follows in the same vein, but with a more pronounced dance-pop feel.

Romy – ‘Enjoy Your Life’

Mid Air was born out of discussions between Romy and acclaimed producer Fred again... The pair initially believed their collaboration would result in songs for other artists, but the work reminded Romy of the formative experiences she had at queer clubs during her youth and adolescence. From there, Mid Air was born.

Along with snaking, dance beats inspired by Romy’s love of Calvin Harris, the album retains the raw, honest side that Romy has become known for, with the song ‘Weightless’ touching on struggles with mental health. The record was well-received by critics, who noted its adventurous extension of Romy’s prior work.

Romy is bringing her solo project to Australia for the first time. Her live commitments begin on Thursday, 28th December with a slot at the Beyond the Valley Festival. She’ll play two headline club shows – one at Mary’s Underground in Sydney and the other at Max Watt’s in Melbourne – while also appearing at Wildlands Brisbane on New Year’s Ever and Wildlands Perth on Saturday, 6th January.
