We can’t exactly say it’s a surprise, but nevertheless Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have lived up to everyone’s expectations and scored #1 on the 2012 triple j Hottest 100. The pair’s uber hit Thrift Shop has scored perfect points all over the world, even hitting #1 in the US – so nice one, Australia, we’re totz ‘with it’!
The pair knocked out fellow contenders Of Monsters and Men, as well as PSY, Skrillex, and Tame Impala for pole position on a range of songs that reads as a pretty impressive tracklisting for when the official album is released.
Apart from the amusing theme of the track, and the comical video, Thrift Shop has earned a lot of buzz from the fact that its creators are totally independent. It’s not too often that an artist with no help from a record label of some sort finds themselves in such a position, and it raises the question of whether labels are really needed now at all.
Oh ya, boys!
As you can see in the below list, it was some pretty stiff competition. Kanye West only just made the cut at #96, and Lana Del Rey just scraped in at #86. Parachute Youth, whose track Can’t Get Better Than This was revealed as the station’s most-played track for 2012, fared pretty well at #33.
Our very own Loon Lake knocked dozens of heavyweights out of the way for a place in the top 30, and even came close to beating the great Skrillex, whose Bangerang (previous potential top fiver) landed at #25
