Watch Die Antwoord Befriend A Robot In The First ‘Chappie’ Trailer

The first trailer for Neill Blomkamp’s new sci-fi movie Chappie, starring South African hip-hop duo Die Antwoord, British actor Dev Patel and Australian Hugh Jackman, has arrived, giving fans a first look at Die Antwoord’s Yo-Landi Vi$$er and Ninja’s first role in a major film.

The film, helmed by the same director behind Elysium and District 9, follows the story of an inventor, played by Dev Patel, and his robot creation, Chappie, who can think and feel for himself.

Last year it was reported that Die Antwoord’s Yo-Landi Vi$$er and Ninja will appear in the movie as themselves, giving credence to their 2012 single Baby’s On Fire in which Yolandi raps, “My bodyguard help me get to the bar / Neill Blomkamp’s makin’ me a movie star“.

While the nature of their characters hasn’t yet been officially announced, it’s speculated that in the film the duo are tasked with raising Chappie as a part of their family. “You know what’s a black sheep?” Yo-Landi asks Chappie in the trailer. “It’s like when you different to everyone else.” Adds Ninja later on, “We’re gonna make you cool, and tough.”

Die Antwoord have been showcasing their brushes with fame of late. Just yesterday they dropped their new music video Ugly Boy, which features an all-star cast including Jack Black, the ATL Twins, Flea, Marilyn Manson, Cara Delevingne and Dita Von Teese. The tack is featured on Die Antwoord’s latest album Donker Mag, released earlier this year.

Chappie was filmed in South Africa, the birthplace of both Die Antwoord and director Blomkamp. It’s set for an Australian release on March 12th 2015. Watch the trailer below and make sure to look out for Hugh Jackman’s magnificent mullet.
