Watch Missy Elliott’s Emotional Video Vanguard Award Acceptance Speech At The VMA’s

In addition to bringing down the damn HOUSE with a career-spanning performance that featured all-grown-up ‘Work It’ child dance star Alyson Stoner at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards, hip-hop kween Missy Elliott was also honoured with the prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

The gong was presented by noneother than Cardi B, who revealed that the first album she ever bought was a Missy record, and joked that everyone in the bizz had copied the iconic rapper at some point (even herself).

Taking to the podium amid a deafening chorus of cheers, Missy accepted the golden astronaut statue and rattled off a long list of thank you’s, including – but not limited to – God, her m8 Janet Jackson, her inspirations Busta Rhymes, Madonna, Peter Gabriel and, of course, Timbaland. She also took a moment to pay tribute to Aaliyah – who tragically passed away just over 18 years ago now.

Missy also made sure to dedicate the award to the dance music community all across the world, recognising that they’re part of what makes her videos so special #nawwww
