The Offspring‘s classic track Gone Away has always been a bit of an emotional song – one that you could imagine being stripped back and still packing quite a punch.
And that’s exactly what the band did on their recent tour of America, which featured LA band Dead Sara as their main support act. The bands clicked, and frontman Dexter Holland found Dead Sara singer Emily Armstrong would be a perfect fit for a stripped-down version of the track.
A bit of tweaking and workshopping, and the collaboration turned into a “special moment” of each show on tour, as Holland told Rolling Stone.
“When we started building our own set list, I realized the stripped-down version of ‘Gone Away,’ which we’ve been doing for a few years, would fit Emily’s voice really well,” he said.
“It turned out to be a special moment in the show each night.”
Now, with piano and drums featuring heavily, The Offspring and Armstrong have re-recorded the track, and a special video of them performing the song on tour has been released. Check it out at the bottom of the page.
Needless to say, unless Armstrong jets in to Australia, it’s unlikely this collaboration will take place at the Offspring’s sold-out sideshows in March, which they’ll do as part of their visit for Soundwave 2013.
