Foo Fighters have had a bit of down time between the legs (mind out of the gutter) of their Sonic Highways world tour, and they’ve naturally used it to disguise themselves as mild-mannered covers band, ‘Chevy Metal’, and perform an undercover gig at California’s Conejo Valley Days Carnival, Thousand Oaks.
Well, sort of. Chevy Metal is actually drummer Taylor Hawkins’ all-covers side project who were booked to play the fair, but their performance was given a substantial amount of extra girth when Hawk-eye welcomed fellow Foos, Dave Grohl and Chris Shiflet, to the iconic Pizza stage.
Together with the Foo Fighters’ keyboardist-for-hire, Rami Jaffee, and Hawkins’ regular Chevy Metal/Birds of Satan bandmates, the group busted out an 18-song, ‘best of classic rock’ set, featuring renditions of AC/DC, Van Halen, Alice Cooper, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Queen and Billy Joel tunes, among others. Strangely enough, they didn’t throw in any Foos covers.
“I’m just a rhythm guitar player in this band, but Taylor makes me sing once in a while,” Grohl joked before launching into Bryan Adams’ most enduring hit, Summer of ’69.
