This is the year that Weezer finally get to live out their heavy metal fantasies. Just months after River Cuomo and the gang dropped the glam metal-indebted Van Weezer album, they’ve come through with a cover of Metallica’s ‘Enter Sandman’.
‘Enter Sandman’ was the opening track and lead single from Metallica’s mega-selling Black Album. Weezer’s version is the latest single lifted from the upcoming The Metallica Blacklist covers album. It’s a faithful rendition, though as Van Weezer indicated, Cuomo can’t help but sound like a dorky outsider no matter the context.
Conceived in celebration of The Black Album‘s 30th anniversary, The Metallica Blacklist is a 53-track release with contributions from Phoebe Bridgers, Moses Sumney, St. Vincent, Mac DeMarco, Rina Sawayama, Flatbush Zombies, Kamasi Washington, Miley Cyrus, the Neptunes, PUP, My Morning Jacket and many many more.
It’ll be arriving on Friday, 10th September alongside a remastered edition of Metallica’s original album. Released in August 1991, The Black Album remains Metallica’s biggest selling album, going 16x Platinum in the US and 13x Platinum in Australia.
For superfans, there’s also a deluxe box set on its way this September, featuring the double-vinyl album, a picture disc, three live albums, 14 CDs, six DVDs, a hardcover book, and more. Take a listen to Weezer’s ‘Enter Sandman’ below.
