Willis Earl Beal Australian Tour 2013 – Falls Festival Sideshows

You could be forgiven at this point in time for not knowing the name Willis Earl Beal, but not for much longer. The habitually charming crooner has announced two very special headlining dates while in town for Falls Festival.

The debu album from the singer/songwriter was released earlier this year. Rather than producing an album that fitted neatly into people’s expectations, Beal drew on everything and anything in his life, or in his world, and stacked it all up for Acousmatic Sorcery.

Having spent all his life, so far, living in Chicago, Beal recently went through with a long-term dream of relocating to the deserts of Albuquerque, where he was so determined to stick to his dream that he lived on the streets. It was here that he realised singing could help his mind escape, and when he landed his first proper job at a motel, the nightshifts became studio time, recording tracks on a dodgie little mic and a cassette player.

The musician is no stranger to the hard yards of achieving a public status after a self-promotion technique landed him a 4-page interview on Found Magazine, who discovered one of Beal’s self-drawn and printed flyers, which simply stated: “My name is Willis Earl Beal. Call me and I’ll sing you a song. Write to me and I’ll draw you a picture”. It was accompanied of course with his real address and phone number, and resulted in scores of people contacting him.

Willis Earl Beal’s story is like no other, and his way of telling it is completely unique, also making for a rare performance that you will not want to miss. You can catch the man himself at the dates below. And while you’re there, check out the flyer as well!
