Yours & Owls Festival Is Going Plastic Free In 2018

Wollongong’s Yours & Owls Festival has announced it will be going plastic free in 2018, replacing single-use plastic products with compostable and reusable alternatives to make this year’s event as green as possible.

The festival, which entered into a partnership with Plastic Free Wollongong and Citizen Blue in 2017 to help combat plastic pollution, is preparing to replace over 15,000 single-use plastic items like water bottles, straws and cutlery with more eco-friendly ones during this September’s event.

The move comes after Splendour In The Grass announced plans to remove all single-use plastic water bottles over the next three years, after banning the use of plastic straws in all bars and stalls at this year’s event.

Yours & Owls Festival is also partnering with Wollongong City Council to plant trees in support of bush regeneration on 16th August, in an attempt to restore part of Puckeys Estate, near the festival site at Stuart Park.

20 people will also have the chance to buy tickets to the sold-out festival during the cleanup. To get involved, sign up here before Wednesday, 8th August.

“Seeing rubbish in and about the coastline is a reminder that unless we are conscious of what we do with our waste, our waterways and ocean life will deteriorate,” says Yours & Owls Festival Director Balunn Jones.

“There are so many good people in the community that spend their weeks raising awareness of these issues. We are lucky enough to have a festival right next to the beach and want to do whatever we can to make sure we are contributing to making our town a better place for the future.”

This year’s Yours & Owls Festival will take place over the last weekend of September, and will feature sets from the likes of Angus & Julia Stone, Peking Duk, Alison Wonderland, The Jungle Giants, Methyl Ethel, Ocean Alley and Hockey Dad.
