Billy Bragg Announces Australian Tour Oct/Nov, 2012

Musical statesman Stephen William Bragg, more commonly known as Billy Bragg, is headed our way in a couple of months for the 2012 instalment of the Melboourne Festival. However, not content with just making two appearances at the festival, Bragg will be sticking around for a 6-stop national tour that does include SA & WA.

As for this Melbourne Festival, Bragg will pay homage to Woody Guthrie, a prolific folk musician whose 100th birthday would have taken place this year (Beck recently covered Guthrie’s Ain’t Got No Home). Bragg has a special connection to the music of Guthrie, after Woody’s daughter Nora discovered a wealth of unrecorded lyrics following her father’s passing, Bragg and Wilco set them to music and recorded the critically acclaimed Mermaid Avenue albums. The Complete Sessions has just been released, including Mermaid Avenue Vol. III. Bragg will also delve into his own storied history, playing music spanning from throughout his longstanding 14-album career.

Being recently described as a ‘national treasure’ by the London Times, Bragg’s music is born from both personal experience and political/social unrest, with the 54-year-old showing no signs of slowing down or easing up.

“I write about the things that make me angry: sometimes it’s the government, sometimes it’s the girl,” explained Bragg.
