In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Against Me! frontman Tom Gabel has announced he is planning on undergoing a sex change and continue life under the new name Laura Jane Grace.
Gabel opened up in the interview, which will go to print this Friday, explaining that he will soon begin the initial treatments for the procedure, which includes: “taking hormones and undergoing electrolysis treatments”. Fans will have to wait for the whole article to find more information, however, Gabel discusses how he has battled with gender dysmorphia for years.
This news has brought new meaning to lyrics from one Against Me! song in particular: The Ocean, “If I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman, Mum says she would have called me Laura”.
Nothing yet on the fate of the band, though Gabel has commented on how these changes will affect his life: “I’m going to have embarrassing moments, and that won’t be fun. But that’s part of what talking to [Rolling Stone] is about – it’s hoping people will understand, and hoping they’ll be fairly kind”.
It goes without saying, Gabel will receive overwhelming support from their fan base, who await news on what is to become of Against Me!
