Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival have today added to their already impressive lineup, giving us some hints on which acts might be heading south to also grace us with their presence at the 2014 instalment of Splendour In The Grass.
Lorde, Damon Albarn, Outkast, Foster The People and Kelis were amongst names added to the bill today, joining an already impressive lineup that boasts Kanye West, Franz Ferdinand, Jack Johnson, Basement Jaxx, and Manic Street Preachers.
Outkast are now a shoe-in to headline Splendour, with the recently reformed hip hop duo releasing a statement back in January that said they would be “the marquee act at over 40 festivals around the world throughout the Spring/Summer of 2014”. They’re already set to play at New York’s Governers Ball and California’s Coachella, as well as Orange Warsaw Festival in Poland and Wireless Festival in England.
Foster The People are also looking good as Splendour contenders, with frontman Mark Foster confirming the band will come to Australia in 2014 and all but saying they’d play the festival. “We will be down there this year. I can tell you that. We love Splendour, that was I think our the first festival we ever played in Australia and we all remember it very fondly. So we’ll see what happens.”
Blur frontman Albarn is in with a chance, as the Britpop legend certainly has some making up to do with Aussie audiences following his highly-publicised cancellation of the seminal outfit’s Big Day Out appearance at the start of the year.
Lorde is definitely a possibility – the teenage songstress popped her Splendour cherry in 2013 as a last-minute replacement for a sick Frank Ocean, at the time saying she “didn’t even know what Splendour was”. She has, however, only just announced a headlining tour of Oz for April and May, making a late July return not impossible, but less probable.
Kelis is also an outside chance to play at our favourite mid-winter frolic. She’s got tour dates free, has just released her latest album, Food, and hasn’t visited Down Under in 10 years. Bombay Bicycle Club, SBTRKT, Jungle, Parquet Courts and The Strypes could also be making the trip to Byron.
Both Splendour In The Grass and Fuji Rock are set to take place between 25-27th July.
