Listen To Kurt Cobain’s Achingly Moving Cover Of A Beatles Classic

The lead up to the premiere of Brett Morgen’s Kurt Cobain documentary Montage Of Heck has unleashed onto the world a number of Cobain’s previously unheard audiotapes and demos, the latest of which, and arguably best so far, is the Nirvana frontman’s haunting cover of the Beatles’ And I Love Her.

Cobain’s take on the McCartney-penned 1964 song is expectedly solemn and stripped down, McCartney’s peppy vocals replaced with Cobain’s aching and emotional voice. As Rolling Stone point out, it’s an interesting choice of cover for Cobain, given he reportedly once claimed to love the Beatles but hate Paul McCartney.

“Nobody in Kurt’s life — not his management, wife, bandmates — had ever heard his Beatles thing,” Brett Morgen told Rolling Stone. “I found it on a random tape. It’s a Paul song. How’s that for shattering the myth.”

Montage of Heck was created with the support of Kurt Cobain’s family, and is executive produced by his and Courtney Love’s daughter Frances Bean Cobain – who says she is not actually a Nirvana fan.

In researching for the documentary, creator Brett Morgen trawled through a storage locker filled with Cobain’s possessions, including notes, poems, drawings and more than 100 never-before-heard cassette tapes of Cobain’s recordings.

Amongst his discoveries Morgen also found previously unseen footage of Nirvana playing in a living room for an audience of just two and a “mind blowing 12 minute acoustic Cobain unheard track” which is supposed to feature on the film’s soundtrack, a release date for which is yet to be announced.

Montage Of Heck will premiere in Australia with a limited theatrical release on May 7th, which can’t come soon enough. Listen to the chilling cover below.
