Violent Soho’s Luke Boerdam Is Producing Tired Lion’s “Sick” Debut Album

Perth rockers Tired Lion have revealed that their debut album, which is due later this year, is being produced by Violent Soho frontman Luke Boerdam.

Tired Lion announced yesterday that they had started recording their album with Boerdam and Blackbird Studio’s Dave Parkin, while Boerdam also took to socials to hype up the album.

“Landed in Perth and stoked to start making a record with these legends!!! The new songs are sounding sick!! It’s got the guitar smarts of The Breeders, pulled back a little like Splendora, with some solid Basement style riffage,” he wrote. “I can’t wait for people to hear it!”

Since then, Tired Lion frontwoman Sophie Hopes has told triple j that it still doesn’t quite feel real, given how much Violent Soho have influenced her sound.

“The first Violent Soho song I ever heard was ‘Muscle Junkie or ‘Jesus Stole My Girlfriend’ quite some time ago and that really, from that point, influenced my songwriting for the better,” she says.

“So it’s so good to have this absolute rock wizard in the room with you when you’re writing — he’s just had so much great input so far.”

Hopes says Tired Lion have “a whole heap of songs” ready to record, and she’s even been doing some songwriting with Boerdam as well.

“He says ‘that bit’s cool’, ‘you don’t need to play that for that long’. Also a song in there that was pretty much written from scratch too [and another] I didn’t think would make the cut. It’s just a different approach that we would take to songwriting and it’s really opened our eyes to just how we can improve.”

Hopes says Tired Lion will drop a new single “pretty soon”, and are planning on releasing their album around the middle of the year.

The Tired Lion x Luke Boerdam collab isn’t too much of a surprise; Tired Lion supported Violent Soho on their national tour last year. That being said, Tired Lion’s debut album will be Boerdam’s first producing credit on another band’s album.
