Police Praise Good Things Festival Crowds, After “Small Number” Of Drug Incidents

Police have praised crowds at the inaugural Good Things Festival, following only a “small number” of drug and alcohol-related incidents.

Victoria Police told Music Feeds that Good Things’ Melbourne crowd was “very well behaved, with only one patron being evicted due to drunk behaviour” at Flemington Racecourse on Friday, 7th December.

While the Sydney leg saw a security guard die in hospital after suffering a suspected heart attack in Parramatta Park on Saturday, NSW Police said the day “ran smoothly” overall.

Around 13,500 people attended the Sydney leg, and police conducted 76 searches, resulting in 18 drug detections. 10 people were also refused entry at the main gates, while four people were removed from within the event.

“It was really positive to see people having a good time and heeding police warnings,” said Parramatta Police Area Commander, Superintendent Julie Boon.

“The small number of people who ignored our advice about illegal activity were dealt with accordingly. Police worked closely with the promoter to ensure the event ran smoothly.”

A Queensland Police Service spokesperson said “police were generally happy with the conduct of those attending” the Brisbane leg of the festival at Brisbane Showgrounds on Sunday, despite “a small number of public order issues both inside and within the vicinity of the RNA [Showgrounds]”.

“There were a small number of arrests which mainly related to the possession of drugs as well liquor and public order offences,” the spokesperson said.

“Police would continue to encourage any persons attending events such as Good Things to consider their own personal safety, particularly when making personal choices with respect to the consumption of intoxicating substances.”

Prior to Good Things’ Sydney event, NSW Police responded to accusations it had charged the festival “exorbitant” fees to police the event, which led organisers to reverse their decision to allow under-18s to attend the Sydney date.

At the time, Superintendent Boon said, “Organisers moved to reduce risks and lower the related police costs by limiting the venue to one stage and restricting access to the event to adults only.”

Good Things Festival 2018 featured performances from the likes of The Offspring, Stone Sour, All Time Low, Dropkick Murphys, Bullet For My Valentine, The Used, BABYMETAL and The Smith Street Band.
