Middle Kids have released a new song entitled ‘Terrible News’, the fifth and seemingly final single from their forthcoming third studio album Faith Crisis: Pt. 1, which is set for release next month on Friday February 16th. It follows on from a string of singles the Sydney trio released throughout 2023: May’s ‘Bootleg Firecracker’, July’s ‘Highlands’, October’s ‘Dramamine’ and November’s ‘Bend’.
To coincide with the song’s release, the band have released a one-take music video for it directed by longtime collaborator Nick McKinlay. Shot around the industrial estate of Marrickville in Sydney’s inner west, drummer Harry Day is depicted as a paperboy running through the streets to share the “terrible news”. Watch it below.
Middle Kids – ‘Terrible News’
In a press statement, Middle Kids frontwoman Hannah Joy described the song as “cathartic to write”, as well as a song that “feels great to play”. Written during COVID lockdowns, Joy recalls the frustrations that were felt around that time which ultimately lead to her writing the song. “There was a lot of confusion, information and rules, anger, people judging people, loss and distrust. I eventually felt so overwhelmed by all the noise, I couldn’t take it anymore.”
In addition to releasing new singles, the occasional festival appearance and a North American tour in support of Jimmy Eat World and Manchester Orchestra, Middle Kids’ 2023 took a festive turn towards the end. Not only did they release their first Christmas song – a cover of Chris Rea’s ‘Driving Home for Christmas’ – but Joy also made her film acting debut in the independent Australian film Christmess, which was released to both cinemas and streaming last month.
Middle Kids are set to perform at this year’s Bassinthegrass festival in Darwin, alongside the likes of Macklemore, Jet and King Stingray.
