Gordi Returns With New Single ‘Alien Cowboy’

Gordi has shared her first new music of 2025: A single entitled ‘Alien Cowboy’. The Canowindra-born and Melbourne-based singer-songwriter worked with Costa Rican producer and songwriter Matias Mora on the song, with the pair teaming up in Los Angeles to make the song together. In a press statement, Gordi notes that Kendrick Lamar‘s album Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers had just come out at the time – which featured the song ‘Auntie Diaries’, in which Lamar reflects on childhood homophobia and coming to embrace both his gay and transgender familiy members.

“I was thinking about what a gay utopia would look like,” she said. “Fabricating an imaginary place where, as queer people, you could feel wholly accepted. I sat down at the piano and we recorded this low, subby, deteriorated part. I was imagining a scene – stumbling through the desert and this mirage appears, this beautiful Salvadore Dali-type world. Everything is melting and there is this giant figure, with their hand outstretched inviting me in.”

An accompanying music video has been shared for the single, which was directed by longtime friend and collaborator Madeleine Purdy. The clip depicts Gordi as both a scorpion inside a glass case and the human that captured it. “I think it’s an interesting question to ask yourself: If you had yourself as a pet, in a gorgeous little tank where you were safe, would you free you?” said Purdy. “We wanted to make a video that explored what it’s like being both the master of – and captive to – your own life.”

Gordi – ‘Alien Cowboy’

‘Alien Cowboy’ is Gordi’s first new solo and original song in almost two years – following the release of ‘Broke Scene’ in March 2023. Since then, she has released two covers: One of Violent Soho‘s ‘Covered In Chrome’, and one of Charli XCX‘s ‘Apple’. Furthermore, she has collaborated with Scandinavian musical collective Slowshift on their song ‘Sir’, and teamed up with Irish singer-songwriter Soak last October for the track ‘Lunch At Dune’.
