Legendary producer and sound engineer Andy Johns, who worked on classics like Led Zeppelin‘s IV and The Rolling Stones‘ Exile on Main Street, has died aged 61.
Johns got started at 18 and worked as Eddie Kramer‘s second engineer on classic recordings for Jimi Hendrix and many others. His body of work is epic, having engineered or produced records for artists like Television, Van Halen, Joni Mitchell and Eric Clapton. His signature sound is said to be categorised by his work on Free‘s 1970 album Highway, which he both engineered and produced.
Music was a family affair for Johns, with his older brother Glyn Johns producing albums for Led Zeppelin and The Who and his nephew Ethan Johns working with acts like Ryan Adams, Kings of Leon and Laura Marling.
Johns is survived by son Will Johns, a blues singer and guitarist, and son Evan Johns, the former drummer of rock band Hurt.
