After lunch is “rock ‘n roll o’clock” for Living End drummer Andy Strachan, who took the morning to drop the kids off at school and the folks at the airport before getting down to business with Music Feeds. The Living End will soon set out on their first Australian headlining gigs in two years.
To make their return more accessible the Melbourne trio have kept tickets prices at around $50. “We’re lucky we’re in that position where we can just throw those shows on,” explains Strachan. “It’s not easy to do. We’re not going to make much money out of it. We’re just doing it basically because we want to play.”
From the sounds of it, the band’s anticipation for their upcoming three-date tour matches any building fan enthusiasm, with Andy revealing that opportunities for The Living End to play live together are scarce nowadays, with frontman Chris Cheney living in America.
Once Cheney is back in town for the tour the band will start working on a new record. Andy says he hopes travelling together in a van between regional venues will help The Living End rediscover their roots. “We’re going into it with no tricks we want to strip it right back,” Strachan insists. “Just the three of us in a room just making a whole lot of noise.”
As for returning to more intimate venues like Waves in Wollongong or Canberra’s Anu Bar, Strachan gushes that he just wants to “get back and do those sweaty rooms” after being inspired by The Living End’s small club run through Europe earlier this year. “We need to do a lot more of that regional touring and playing those smaller, sweatier club shows. There’s nothing like it.”
