PREMIERE: Sydney Alt-Rockers Marvell Scale New Heights On ‘Needle’

Northern Beaches alt-rock quintet Marvell will release their fiery new single, ‘Needle’, later this week. We’re premiering it today on Music Feeds.

Billed as a song that “describes the hardships, trauma and impossible hope that accompanies a cancer battle,” ‘Needle’ begins as a slow-burning acoustic confessional. As it proceeds, it grows in size, texture and emotional weight, eventually reaching an impassioned full band climax.

Max Marvell and his brother, Tom, share lead vocal duties on ‘Needle’. The song was written about Marvell’s former drummer, BJ, who was battling testicular cancer.

“We wanted to write about how we felt, imagining ourselves in his shoes and really trying to understand what he was going through, rather than just telling his story,” said Max. “The track starts as something contemplative, going through the fear and the uncertainty then quickly evolving into a more powerful song, daring at the possibility of hope.

“All in all, this track aims to capture that feeling of staring down the barrel of something terrible, when all the odds are against you, and saying fuck it – I’m going to give all I’ve got to make it through.”

‘Needle’ is the next single to be lifted from Marvell’s upcoming EP, Comfort Is King, due out on Thursday, 9th December. The EP aligns Marvell with their heroes, Powderfinger and Paul Kelly, as well as contemporaries like Catfish and the Bottlemen and Ceres. Presave it here and check out ‘Needle’ below.
