An 18-year-old star of the UK grime scene, Depzman, was knifed to death outside of a nightclub in Birmingham, England last night. The rapper was attending a tribute for fellow grime artist Shamz, who died under similar circumstances last year.
An 18-year-old man has already been placed under arrest for suspicion of murdering Josh Ribera, who was known in the UK rap scene as Depzman. The young artist was attending a fundraising event for 16-year-old Kyle Sheehan a.k.a. Shamz, who was stabbed to death in September last year. The proceeds from the event were going towards placing a headstone over Sheehan’s grave. Ribera was leaving KCs nightclub in the Selly Oak area of Birmingham, when he was attacked, shortly before 11:00pm.
West Midlands Police have launched an investigation, with the motive for the killing unclear. A spokesman for the department said:
“Police were alerted by the ambulance service just before 11pm to reports of an 18-year-old man who had been stabbed in the area of Coronation Road in Selly Oak…He was taken to hospital for treatment but unfortunately despite the best efforts of medical staff died in the early hours (21 September).”
Local resident Matthew Roper, 22, told the Birmingham Mail that Ribera was his idol, saying “Josh represented Birmingham, he went to the Lord of the Mics which is a rap battle in London, about three four months ago and he won. He was a legend in Birmingham, all my You Tube is full of his music, he rapped the truth.”
