In a truly inspiring tale, Dave Chappelle has revealed that Idris Elba used to be ~that~ friend. Dropping by for an episode of the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Chappelle told Rogan he used to buy weed from Elba at a New York comedy club.
During their chat, Chappelle discussed his time routining the comedy club circuit and the importance of treating everyone with respect. He was talking about those in customer service roles especially, referring to Idris Elba’s time as a security guard.
“Idris Elba, the famous actor, used to be a security guard at [comedy club] Caroline’s… I used to buy weed from him,” he told Rogan.
Elba had already disclosed his history of selling weed in a 2013 interview. Speaking with GQ back in 2013 he spoke a bit about what life was like prior to landing his role on The Wire.
“I was running with cats. I mean, I was DJ’ing, but I was also pushing bags of weed; I was doing my work. I had to.
“I know that sounds corny, but this is the truth.”
He went on to say he’d sell drugs while working at Caroline’s. He said he’d sold to a bunch of successful comedians, citing D. L. Hughley and Dave Chappelle.
“All those black comedians, they knew me as a doorman.”
