Indie sadboi royalty Death Cab for Cutie are finally heading back Down Under this November, and yes, it’s been a long time between visits.
The beloved alt-rock outfit have locked in three east coast shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, marking their first Australian tour in over seven years. Fans can expect a career-spanning set packed with the hits, alongside fresh material from their upcoming album I Built You A Tower, landing June 5.
Death Cab for Cutie – ‘Riptides’
The tour arrives as the band step into a new era, already teasing what’s to come with recent single Riptides (above) and if history’s anything to go by, you can expect plenty of feelings, introspection, and at least one moment where you stare into the middle distance reconsidering your entire life.
Frontman Ben Gibbard says the drive to keep creating hasn’t faded, even after nearly three decades in the game.
“I just love the feeling of being in a room having just made something that I’m proud of,” he said. “I feel like I have an obligation to my 12-year-old self to keep doing this and find the joy in it.”
Formed back in 1997, Death Cab for Cutie have grown from cult college-radio favourites into one of the defining indie bands of the 21st century – the kind of band that soundtracked your first heartbreak, your second heartbreak, and probably a late-night existential spiral somewhere in between.
Now, they’re bringing it all back to Aussie stages for a very overdue reunion.
