Facebook Is Launching AR-Enabled Smart Glasses With Ray-Ban In 2021

Facebook and Ray-Ban are two names that just go together. Except this time it’s not some random dude you knew in high school tagging you in a Ray-Ban sale on Facey. The social media platform has teamed up with the sunnies brand to create AR-enabled smart glasses.

Yup, Facebook reckons we’ll be getting their Ray-Ban branded smart glasses next year. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the news at his virtual Facebook Connect Conference.

“After spending time with their team and visiting their factory, I knew that they were the right partner for us to help bring the best technology together with the best glasses,” said the Zuck.

The glasses, which have apparently been in production for months, will have frames designed by Ray-Ban creator EssilorLuxottica.

FB’s Hugo Barra tweeted a video advertisement saying, “Beyond thrilled to finally share a sneak peek of our Facebook partnership with Ray-Ban!

“Our first smart glasses will launch next year, and that’s just the beginning… The future will be a classic and it’s coming in 2021.”

It seems like the smart glasses will be AR-enabled, rather than an AR device. The Verge reports that the glasses will not have any integrated display of any kind.

There’s no real word on what the design will look like, what features the product will have, or the real point of the smart glasses just yet.
