Pitchfork is reporting that ‘hacktivist’ group, Anonymous, has begun work on a social music platform called Anontune.
Apparently, the service – which Wired reports is 20 per cent complete – will allow users to create streamlined playlists that draw content from third-party distributors like YouTube, SoundCloud, and MySpace. A prototype for the service is already online.
Anontune has been in the works since February 23 this year, approximately one month after American authorities shut down the file-sharing service Megaupload. The ‘Hacktivists’ retaliated by hacking websites of well-known organisations such as the American Department of Justice, Universal Music Group, and the Recording Industry Association of America.
An alien-voiced video announcement about Anontune has surfaced online, with the founders pledging the platform “will never host any copyrighted music.”
