Hear Kendrick Lamar’s Freestyle Salute To Notorious B.I.G.

Nostalgia for The Notorious B.I.G. has reached a high water mark, with today marking 18 years since the rap legend was gunned down by an unknown killer. And to pay homage to the legacy of the crowned East Coast King of hip-hop, the current West Coast King, Kendrick Lamar, has offered up a musical tribute.

During an appearance on the first instalment of DJ Big Boy’s new LA radio show, Real 92.3, the Compton emcee performed a freestyle rap over Biggie’s 1994 Ready To Die track, The What.

“This here’s what it is, I came in this game,” he flows. “I stuck my fingers in this game/ I wore no chain in this game/ My hood, my name in this game/ Now I double up / Time to bubble up the bread and huddle up.”

Lamar even gets worked up enough to request a few extra bars to polish off the freestyle salute to the Brooklyn legend on the anniversary of his untimely passing.

The audio isn’t the best quality, but you can check it out below.

Meantime, Lamar’s new album, currently dubbed [Untitled], is due for release on March 23rd.
