Yesterday Music Feeds reported the announcement of the 2014 lineup for Chicago’s Punk and alt rock extravaganza Riot Fest, and hidden amongst the many names on that bill was satirical thrash metal outfit GWAR, whose frontman Dave Brockie was found dead in his Virginia home earlier this year.
Today, reports Metal Sucks, a band rep has confirmed that some form of GWAR will appear at the event, saying that “Riot Fest is keeping GWAR’s spot warm for them,” adding cryptically that “something will happen.”
This is the first news of GWAR continuing to perform since David Brockie, the GWAR frontman known to fans as Oderus Urungus, died earlier this year at the ago of 50. In April, the surviving members of GWAR and Slave Pit Inc issued a video statement, describing Brockie’s passing as a “great loss to the worlds of art, music, drama, and literature.”
The clip was posted with a missive on the band’s Facebook page, announcing the creation of The Dave Brockie Foundation, “a charity fund with the mission of promoting the advancement of music, images, letters and performances in the arts. It will endeavour to encourage promising talents, as well as preserving the legacy of Dave’s body of works.” There is no word yet as to whether their Riot Fest performance will have anything to do with the foundation.
Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Chicago instalment of Riot Fest will take place from September 12-14, sandwiched between two other Riot Fests, in Toronto and Denver. Key players on this year’s bill include the incomparable The Cure, Jane’s Addiction, The National, Rise Against, Slayer and the Wu-Tang Clan.
