Is Jay Z’s New Streaming Service The Major Labels’ Spotify Killer?

“If Beyonce, Jay Z, Madonna, Kanye, Nicki Minaj, Coldplay, Daft Punk and Jack White told you to jump off a bridge would you do it?!?” – your Mum right now, probably.

The social media accounts of some of the world’s biggest musicians have simultaneously turned a shade of aquamarine blue this afternoon as Skynet finally commences its apocalyptic take over of everything we hold dear.

Well, almost. The synchronised social posts are a marketing stunt to launch Jay Z‘s brand new high-quality music streaming site Tidal, which claims to be “the first music streaming service that combines the best High Fidelity sound quality, High Definition music videos and expertly Curated Editorial.”

Tidal is available now for people with inherent discerning sensibilities and 26 Aussie dollars they simply don’t need every month.

Tidal will stream lossless quality music which is set to be at 1411 kbps, or 16 bit/44.1 khz which, for all those not trained in music engineering, is roughly around CD quality and nearly three times “superior” to what Spotify currently offers.

With the recent drama regarding Taylor Swift pulling her music from Spotify and initiating a debate on the questionable benefits to labels and artists from streaming, Tidal looks to be a bold move by the majors to claim back some of those sweet, sweet subscription dollars directly.

The long-rumoured service is set to join the roughly five hundred other music streaming sites currently bidding for your headphone space. With the biggest names in the biz behind it, especially Kanye and Rihanna who are both set to release new albums in the coming months, it’s not impossible to see Tidal taking a tasty bite out of Spotify and whatever musical magic the nerds at Apple are cooking up right now.

Head to Tidal.com to see what all the fuss is about, and go ahead and change your profile pic to blue, because Yeezy said so.
