James Murphy Wrestles With Break Up Of LCD Soundsystem

Frontman James Murphy has expressed his ongoing struggles with the decision to break up his former band LCD Soundsystem. In an article posted by NME, Murphy opened up about how dismantling the band, while ultimately the right thing to do, was difficult as there was, and is, no bad blood between the former members of LCD Soundsystem.

“I don’t know if it’s a good decision,” he said, adding: “And, at times, I wish I wasn’t retired. It’s a rare thing when a band stops playing together when everybody really still loves each other and everything’s fine. So it wasn’t like, ‘Oh, we have creative differences and we want to move on’.”

“So I regret it in the sense that I like them, and we like each other and we want to make more music, but I don’t regret it because…it wasn’t sustainable. For anybody,” he said.

LCD Soundsystem parted ways after their final show, which took place on April 2, 2011 at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. A documentary was created to commemorate the event and the band’s legacy titled Shut Up and Play the Hits. As seen in the clip below (taken from the doco) Murphy indicates that his age played a role in deciding to move on from performing and take up other endeavours, such as writing.

There still remains the chance that LCD Soundsystem will temporarily reform to record an undisclosed cover for an undisclosed film. On the possibility of regrouping for the soundtrack, Murphy said that all the former members of LDC Soundsystem “seem to want to do it”.

As for Murphy making music as a solo artist, NME notes that the songwriter is tinkering away in a casual fashion.

“Lately I’ve been making little synth songs at other people’s studios,” Murphy said.
