John Frusciante Announces New Electronic Album ‘Maya’, Shares First Song

Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante has announced new solo album titled Maya will arrive next month, with the instrumental electronic album dedicated to his late cat of the same name, who recently passed away. To coincide with the announcement, Frusciante has shared the album’s first single, a hyperactive cut titled ‘Amethblowl’.

Inspired by UK breakbeat, jungle and hardcore, Maya marks Frusciante’s first instrumental electronic album under his own name. Frusciante largely records electronic music under his Trickfinger moniker – indeed, his newest album under the name, She Smiles Because She Presses the Button, arrived a few months ago.

“Maya was with me as I made music for 15 years, so I wanted to name it after her,” commented Frusciante in a statement. “She loved music, and with such a personal title, it didn’t seem right to call myself Trickfinger, somehow, so it’s by John Frusciante.”

“I don’t have that interest in singing or writing lyrics like I used to,” Frusciante adds. “The natural thing when I’m by myself now, is to just make music like the stuff being released this year. I really love the back and forth with machines and the computer.”

Listen to ‘Amethblowl’ below. Maya is scheduled for release Friday, 23rd October via Timesig.
