Kesha Says She Turned Down Contract ‘Freedom’ Offer Requiring Her To Retract Dr Luke Rape Allegations

Kesha has taken to Instagram to voice a shock revelation just over a week after appealing a decision from the Supreme Court not to let her out of her contractual obligations with Sony and Dr Luke Gottwald.

During the appeal, her lawyers likened Kesha’s contact situation to “slavery’, and it would appear as if the singer is still feeling trapped by her contact amid the ongoing saga. Kesha filed a lawsuit against Dr Luke in 2014, claiming that he drugged her and raped her in 2005, and continued to control and psychologically abuse her through to 2010 and beyond.

In her latest Instagram post, Kesha suggest that she received an offer to get out of her still-binding contract, if she were to rescind her allegations of rape against Dr Luke. It is unclear though whether the alleged offer had come from formal settlement talks or not.

The post reads: “so. I got offered my freedom IF i were to lie. I would have to APOLOGIZE publicly and say that I never got raped. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS behind closed doors. I will not take back the TRUTH. I would rather let the truth ruin my career than lie for a monster ever again.”

A spokesperson for Dr. Luke made a statement following the post.

“The Court repeatedly stated Kesha is already free to record without Dr. Luke, and that she had not presented any facts supporting her claims. That’s because all the evidence – including Kesha’s own videotaped sworn testimony – show her allegations are false. The only thing Kesha is not free to do is to continue to lie about Dr. Luke through publicity stunts and outrageous smears, ignoring the fact that by her own free will she went to work and entered into new contracts with Dr. Luke years after this ‘incident’ supposedly happened. Her goal all along has been solely personal enrichment by seeking to break contracts that brought her success and millions so she can enter into more lucrative ones. We look forward to our day in court holding Kesha accountable for her lies.”

The comments echoed those by Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Shirley Korereich that it should be possible for Kesha to uphold her contract without working with Dr Luke, a claim her lawyer Mark Geragos refuted as naive.

Sony have also previously stated that they are unable to terminate the contact, and have also toed the line that there is nothing forcing the singer to continue working alongside Dr Luke. “Sony has made it possible for Kesha to record without any connection, involvement or interaction with Luke whatsoever… But it is legally unable to terminate the contract to which it is not a party” said a rep for the company.

Kesha’s most recent formal statement before now outlined that the ongoing legal battle is now “bigger” than just her.

“All I ever wanted was to be able to make music without being afraid, scared, or abused,” she wrote. “This case has never been about a renegotiation of my record contract – it was never about getting a bigger, or a better deal. This is about being free from my abuser. I would be willing to work with Sony if they do the right thing and break all ties that bind me to my abuser.”
